Flow undertook research on behalf of Auckland Transport into the effectiveness of red light cameras in improving road safety. The research involved testing a hypothesis that the incidence of red light running crashes has reduced at signalised intersections where cameras have been installed. Also examined was the hypothesis that the installation of red light cameras has increased rear-end type crashes.
The research was carried out by comparing crash data from the NZTA's crash records for the five year period prior to red light camera installation, as well as the five year period after camera installation, to that at intersections without cameras, testing the data for statistical significance.
