Flow have been involved in providing a range of transport planning and traffic engineering advice for Waitemata District Health Board for their main hospital sites in Henderson and Takapuna in Auckland.
North Shore Hospital and Waitakere Hospital Master Planning;
Flow has been involved in the master planning process for the future expansion of both North Shore Hospital and Waitakere Hospital to deliver the WDHB 2030 clinical services plan. We worked in collaboration with the WDHB, master planning architects and other team members. The overall transportation objective of this master planning process has been to not only provide for vehicle access and parking associated with staff, patients and visitors, but also to introduce transport infrastructure within the site that will encourage and provide accessible and safe pedestrian and cycle links and maintain and foster good public transport accessibility. This has included providing linkages to the external public transport system and also allowing for buses to enter the site.
Our tasks included advising on the appropriate level of parking for staff and public (visitors and patients) to be provided for each stage of implementation, the development of parking buildings, parking areas, circulation roads, access, passenger transport linkages, pedestrian and cycle connectivity, parking management systems, as well as how to manage the demand for travel to the hospitals.
North Shore Hospital
Flow has undertaken separate Transport Assessments to support various resource consent applications for heath related developments within the North Shore Hospital site over the past 5 years. These projects have included a Renal Unit, the Assessment and Diagnostic Unit, extension to the existing hospital podium and a parking building. With all of these assessments traffic engineering and transport planning principals were applied in consultation with the client, and associated architects and planners. This has included reviewing parking demands of the individual developments and the long terms parking supply envisioned for the site and manoeuvrability and accessibility for relevant people such as patients, visitors and staff.
The overall assessments were under taken within a framework of immediate feasibility, medium term direction and the overall master plan objectives to ensure consistency with the overall objectives of the long term development of the site
North Shore Hospital : WDHB Staff Travel Plan
The WDHB staff travel plan was a collaborative project involving staff from both North Shore Hospital and Waitakere Hospital and smaller sites such as the Mason Clinic as well as the North Shore City Council, Waitakere City Council and the Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA). Flow was awarded this competitive tender to provide specialist advice and manage the WDHB, and Councils through the ARTA travel wise process for employees. Our scope of work included developing a staff travel plan for the two hospitals including staff engagement, assessments of the current transport environment and travel patterns of staff, facilitating and analysing the surveyed travel data and the development of Travel Demand Management (TDM) measures. Flow also provided advice moving forward with regard to the development of short term, medium and longer tem actions and events that could be facilitated to support the travel plan process.
